GETTING PLENTY OF SLEEP OR REST

Stealing a catnap in the middle of a work/school day may help – but is it a solution?

Some authorities say we have a growing problem of sleep deprivation, or a lack of good rest with this busy world we live in today. Go, Go, Go….

But sleep “needs” vary depending on age, work intensity, stress , and lifestyle…And though an exact amount cannot be pinpointed, getting a sufficient amount for your individual needs is of high priority!

Lack of adequate sleep has been known to generate irritability, poor vision, slowness, heart disease, depression, sloppiness, colds, distractedness…just to name a few.

Getting a “good’ night’s sleep, however, has equally multiple benefits…such as increased mental clarity, strong cognitive function, stress reduction, weight loss, improved skin, better sex drive, less likely to have accidents…again just to name a few.

Approximately 75 years ago we averaged almost eight hours of sleep a night. Now our general average is down to 6.8. Whether these numbers reflect a serious issue or not is hard to say. However, according to BUSINESS INSIDER, nearly 40% of Americans get less than seven hours a sleep a night and an estimated 70 million have sleep disorders!

With a slightly different perspective, in a research study done by the University of California in 2010, it was suggested that the secret to a long life may come with “just enough sleep”…showing surprising results. The surprise was that when sleep was measured objectively, the best survival (longevity) rate was found among women (ages 50 – 81) who slept 5 to 6.5 hours. (These finding are published on line in the Sleep Medicine journal).

Who decides what just enough is…  YOU! YOU! YOU! So time to WAKE UP and SLEEP (more or less) – depending on YOUR needs or objectives.

FINDING OUR PURPOSE…
Is there truly such a thing as purpose? Is it possible to find it? And can we fulfill it?  

Let me state what I feel to be an appropriate answer to the questions above……YES, YES, and YES!

 

Creating or having a purpose in life is not only indisputable, but also multifarious. For instance, there is Universal Purpose (some may call it SOUL purpose). Universal purpose is of utmost importance. It is the highest purpose we can have.  It is to grow in awareness and understanding. Another way of saying this is – to increase the flame of our individual LIGHT into its true brilliance…or we could say it is simply – to EVOLVE…to become ENLIGHTENED. Then there is what I like to call Life (or Inner) Purpose. Life purpose is, to me, what we came here to do in order to help and serve others as well as our Selves.  Such as Dr. Depak Chopra indicates… his purpose is to heal, to make everyone he comes into contact with happy, and to create peace. This is a higher purpose that gives meaning to our lives. Outer Purpose on the other hand is more closely oriented towards goals or ideals like getting that higher paying job so that we can buy the bigger house or wear nicer clothes. There is nothing wrong with this type of purpose as long as we don’t decide to “live” in this place. We also have what I like to call Present Moment Purpose. With this we are consciously creating a purpose for everything we do – all the little things done and accomplished each day…i.e. getting out of bed in the morning, doing the dishes, walking the dog.  To approach this with a different perspective, I am saying that we consciously create a purpose for every activity – even when there doesn’t seem to be any desire to perform that activity, effort, or work, “It is in the present moment that one finds, creates and fulfills purpose” says Daniel Condron author of the book “The Purpose of Life”. He also states ”purpose is personal benefit – it begins with Self and includes Self  –  for as we cause our Self to be a better person by practicing purpose in all that we do – we become much more capable of helping and aiding many more people”.

Present Moment Purpose, Outer Purpose, and Life Purpose all enhance and add to finding and fulfilling the Universal Purpose. Condron illustrate that we need to practice all the little purposes every day in order to build towards knowing the big purpose in life. This is how we find it…that, coupled with a Still Mind, WILL, and Commitment.

FULFILLMENT of Purpose –“In order to fulfill any purpose we have we must make each day an opportunity for learning and the growth of awareness. Fulfilling our purpose is a matter of our thoughts…and people who fulfill their purpose in life constantly upgrade their thoughts, attitudes, and mental images. This upgrading process leads to great initiations and transformations in consciousness”.  The above statements and ideas are a blending of ideas and quotes resulting from Dr. Condron’s book mentioned in the prior paragraph. I have borrowed them for they succinctly illustrate what I am wishing to convey….Thank You Daniel Condron for your work and gift!

 

In summary…

Our purpose Is “to be LIGHT” and “to LOVE” is the greatest way of becoming that light…

YOGA

THERE ARE ENDLESS STYLES OF YOGA……Iyengar, Astanga, Bikram, Hatha, Kripalu, Power, Kundalini, Sivananda, Viniyoga. You have to experiment, experience, and explore as to which style is best for you. Regardless of your choice, the underlying philosophy and purpose for yoga is common among all the different styles…that is to strengthen the body, make it more flexible, calm and FOCUS the mind, AND awaken the Spirit.

The Health Benefits (i.e. better posture, better breathing) are AS numerous, if not more so, than the different styles. The main thing to keep in mind…Is to pick a style that is right for YOU – And only you can determine that!

 Man must gain knowledge if he is to move beyond his past and present limitationsHowever, I would like to make it clear that I am not referring exclusively, or even primarily, to knowledge of an erudite nature. It is excellent and has a valuable place in the process of growth. More so, though, I am speaking of experiential type knowledge, but most importantly I am speaking of Self and Spiritual Knowledge.

 

In the Vishnu book “The God Within”, it states:

“as the child grows…it slowly winds its way through the channel of true vaginal expression that is within the scope of material existence, not as an embryo but as a fine image of the likeness of God and the fine expression of all vibration… Growth is needed from the carnal to the celestial…and it is the WILL of a person that decides what that growth will be”.

 Years will often go by before man begins to contemplate WHY he must grow, especially through the density of the material existence, yet this is of necessity! This is how man gathers a “fuller” growth pattern, and is able to give a higher understanding to the material world in which he lives…also, to gain the experience in the helping and teaching of others. For it is actually through the thought process of giving to another individual the respect due to the greatness of their spirit…and by giving that “supreme” thought, that we are led into the peace, the happiness, the understanding…of the “purpose” of being in a constant growth pattern.

According to Daniel R. Condron and his book “THE STAGES OF GROWTH”, there are Four Stages of growth (Infancy, Adolescence, Adulthood, and Wisdom)…and, there are also qualities of each stage of growth…and by knowing these different qualities, one is able to determine what stage one is in and then use that to the fullest for his growth. For example, the stage of growth know as Adolescence contains such qualities as curiosity, experimentation, independence, action, questioning, independence………the stage of growth known as Wisdom contains such qualities as peace,  longevity, objectivity, and identity.

About the stage of Wisdom, he goes on to say that you do not have to wait until you are physically old in order to be wise. I feel this is key! He says you can gain wisdom anytime you are willing to teach, share and give of what you have learned freely and without reservation, with an open heart and full of Love.

TIMELY TREATMENTS OF BODY OR ENERGY WORK

Timely is the crucial word here  the fundamental benefits of Bodywork (this includes “energy” work)…especially as a preventative medicine, has been discussed in “Vibrant Health Through Bodywork“. In addition, the benefits of the individual modalities of body and energy work  have also been highlighted at the end of each post about that particular technique (See Bodywork List scroll down to Learn More About – or – click on Slider “Read More” and scroll down).

The point being emphasized…is that if you have a treatment once or twice a year, it will not hold the ability to serve as a preventative tool as when you are having regular and timely treatments. What is meant by timely? Well…your body is the “best” indicator and will usually let you know when you are beginning to become, or have already achieved, imbalance and need to get back to either a physical, emotional, or mental center. For some people it is 2 – 3 weeks, for others 4 – 5 maybe even 6 weeks – let your body be your guide – but be certain to listen!

REGULAR EXERCISE

REGULAR EXERCISE

There are Soooooooooo many ways to exercise: walking, zumba, weightlifting, palates, astanga yoga, biking, skiing, jogging/running, wind surfing, dancing, ice/roller skating, golfing (preferably w/o a cart), rowing, tennis, swimming…

I list these to stir the imagination. Do any sound appealing?…hopefully so. The idea is that you find one (or two/three) YOU “enjoy”…for Exercise is and can be FUN…and then DO IT REGULARLY!

These days we all know that there are GREAT benefits to regular exercise. To list some obvious ones:

  Controls Weight

  Manages/Combats Disease i.e. Heart, Diabetes, Arthritis, etc.

  Increases Energy

  Assists in the prevention of Osteoporosis

  Improves Sleep

However, I wish to highlight my favorite one. To me it is the most powerful benefit of them all…and that is that it “TRANSMUTES” …not only our physical being but our mental/emotional level of being as well! Since our EMOTIONAL/MENTAL OUTLOOK is so important to our ultimate well being…and exercise is an excellent way to SHIFT our thoughts and emotions, especially when they are beginning to delve into unpleasant territory – it is imperative to get into movement!

So Get MOVING!…NOW!…COME ON……….(even if you feel good…you’ll feel even better)

The Alveoli Of The Lungs (above) is where the oxygen exchange takes place in out bodies -without the alveoli, respiration would not be possible.

BREATH IN…   BREATH OUT… BREATH IN… BREATH OUT… BREATHING…It is natural, automatic, and EVERYONE does it! More than food, more than nature, air is INDISPENSABLE! Yet, people rarely learn to use the breath correctly and effectively. As Andrew Weil MD says: “Breathwork Matters”…Deeper, Slower, Quieter.

Slow diaphragmatic breathing has “multiple” health benefits – but one of the most immediate & obvious…RELAXATION!

“Regular” use of Deep Breathing has shown to:
  • improve cardiovascular health and fitness
  • improve immune function
  • improve lipid profile
  • massage the internal organs
  • release toxins
  • relieve pain
  • strengthen the lungs

And these are just to list a few of the physical benefits achieved by the practice of deep breathing. Not to mention, there are also spiritual benefits. It is stated in the book “THE GOD WITHIN” by Elwood Babbitt and Charles Hapgood “Air is not only air – it is filled to the brim with a spiritual vibration of molecules that are not seen”……SO BREATH DEEP, LIVE WELL, and LOVE LIFE!
